This day the ghosts of yesteryear were out in force, as once again the cars return to the site of Tracey's Speedway. Each Palm Sunday the cars of the Victorian Classic and Vintage Speedway Club have returned to remember the past and to honour the memory of those drivers and riders who are no longer with us. Sadly, due to shire council ambivalence (if not outright
opposition) this scene may never be repeated. The grandstand and its
lonely memories are to be left with nary a remembrance of what this
venue meant to the people of post war Melbourne. |

| Perhaps, its for the
best; maybe. Tracey's was known for its excitement, noise and
action. Today old veterans stand around the silent vintage cars
and bikes; and not one engine is to be heard. Modern day sensibilities would probably see anyone foolish enough to actually fire one up collared and carted away by one of the faceless grey men of council. Memories earn no votes. |
